According to a report by ahramonline the online English publication for AL Ahram newspaper, the Egyptian government signed an agreement to provide 10,000 locally manufactured tablet PCs to university students.

Announcement of this agreement was made during proceedings of CairoICT, the largest ICT conference held in Egypt over the last couple of years. The deal was signed on Saturday April 28th between Mohamed Salem, Minister of Communications and Information Technology, and Hussein Khaled, the current Minister of Higher Education, with the co-operation of the Information Technology Industry Development Association (ITIDA). This initiative is inline with a step taken previously by the Indian government, where India launched the world’s cheapest tablet computer that was sold to students at subsidized prices of USD 35!

Providing university students with tools to excel in order to widen their horizons by engaging technology is something great! However, no details were released about this agreement. No one knows who the manufacturer of these tablet PCs is, nor do we have any specs about the tablet itself or even how much it will cost! As far as recipients of these tablet PCs, that’s vague as well, as no criteria of selection was announced. Are they going to give out these tablet PCs for free and according to certain merits that students have or will they be offered at a subsidized price for any to pickup as India did.

Khaled noted that distribution of PCs will help “technological excellence” in university education and also give encouragement of Egypt’s technology industry. We really hope that this becomes the case, and that such an initiative does not end up with just tax payer’s cash down the drain!
