Google TV service in Europe by 2012

google-tv-eric-schmidt.jpgIn a report by Reuters, Google Inc has announced that it will be launching Google TV service in Europe early next year, according to a statement by Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt on Friday.

Google TV will allow users to mix Web and television content on a TV screen via a browser. The Google TV service was launched in the US market in October, but received mixed reviews and was quickly blocked by three of the top US broadcast networks.

In a speech to the Edinburgh television festival, Britain’s premier industry event, Schmidt said “We seek to support the content industry by providing an open platform for the next generation of TV to evolve; the same way Android is an open platform for the next generation of mobile. We expect Google TV to launch in Europe early next year, and of course the UK will be among top priorities.”

Despite Google’s ownership of the world’s most popular online video site YouTube, Google has had little success breaking into the TV market and gaining traction.

The television arena for Google holds great opportunities, in order to extend its online advertising business, which made USD 28 billion for the company last year. However, the TV screen still holds the lion’s share of global advertising budgets.

Last week’s headlines of Google buying Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc spelled nothing but wireless patents added to Google’s portfolio and its entrance to the mobile phone hardware business. Look closely and read between the lines, you’ll find that Google now owns the world’s leading set top box business which delivers content for many of the top cable TV companies in the United States. This set top box business from Motorola would help Google transform its TV project by providing insights into pay-TV.
